One comment about timely kernel upgrades... the "buildkernel" script I mentioned -will- scan kernel.org for the latest release, and automate as much or little of the job as you would like. Just read the mini-doc, and you can run it with prompts or from a config file. With it you'll never build old kernels (unless you want to!).
