Most commercial products have all sorts of management reporting. In the past I've used CMS (Digital on VMS), AideDeCamp, Rational's ClearCase, and several other IBM mainframe products as well as SCCS, RCS and CVS on Unix and Linux. The most important thing is the ability to maintain versions of your code. All do this. CVS has a history command that you can use to generate reports. The advantage of CVS over RCS and some other products is that it allows for multiple people to check out the same file. Another advantage is that it allows for the repository to be located just about anywhere. You can put the repository on a Linux server and access it from a Windows machine. One other piece of experience is with AideDeCamp. I was not the administrator of this. It is also cross platform. It maintained a central database. We found that occasionally the database got corrupted, and the admin had to recreate it. The bottom line is that I think that CVS can do the job and provide your boss with much of the reports he wants at the expense of writing some scripts. You might find that the administrative load on some of the other commercial products may be more than the cost of cobling a few scripts. -- Jerry Feldman <gaf at blu.org> Boston Linux and Unix user group http://www.blu.org PGP key id:C5061EA9 PGP Key fingerprint:053C 73EC 3AC1 5C44 3E14 9245 FB00 3ED5 C506 1EA9 --- StripMime Report -- processed MIME parts --- multipart/signed text/plain (text body -- kept) application/pgp-signature ---
