Bill, I've been looking into the same thing myself, and I've run into some disturbing information. It appears that RHEL 3.0 isn't designed to be self-hosting. I had been planning on building the core packages from another distro (Fedora maybe), and then once I install those core packages, rebuilding everything (including the core packages) from within itself.
