scripting "interactive" input

expect is the right word -- there's a somewhat-standard TCL package called 
'expect' that's installed by default on lots of boxes.  If not, check it out 
at http://expect.nist.gov/ 
I've used it for a couple of pesky tasks in the past; works as advertised.
