I would suggest as a temporary test: chmod -R g+rw /dev/sound/* chmod -R g+rw /dev/snd/* And then restart KDE's sound server. That should work. When you reboot, devfs should apply those same permissions again, however, it might not, which would indicate something is wrong. Did you run etc-update after you upgraded you packages?
