I was able to get sound working but not thru the SPDIF digital output on my Shuttle SN41G2 (nVidia nForce chipset + Intel 810 sound chip) Sounds play fine thru the headphone jack. Maybe my system is using OSS instead of ALSA? Help! Here are some error messages and other configuration details: /alsasound restart Starting sound driver: snd-intel8x0 /lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2115.nptl/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.o: init_module: No such device Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg /lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2115.nptl/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2115.nptl/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.o failed /lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2115.nptl/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.o: insmod snd-intel8x0 failed % alsamixer alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory % alsactl store alsactl: save_state:1061: No soundcards found... % lsmod Module Size Used by Tainted: P i810_audio 27048 0 (unused) ac97_codec 17064 0 [i810_audio] soundcore 6500 2 [i810_audio] snd-page-alloc 10068 0 (autoclean) sg 35852 0 (autoclean) sr_mod 17752 0 (autoclean) etc... modules.conf: # --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. --- # --- ALSACONF verion 1.0.3 --- alias char-major-116 snd alias char-major-14 soundcore alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0 # --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. --- alias sound-slot-0 i810_audio post-install sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -L >/dev/null 2>&1 || : pre-remove sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -S >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
