FWIW - When I was in Japan last fall, I didn't find much in the way of  
MP3 players.  I had expected a wide selection but found only a couple of 
models.  Instead, they had a huge variety of cell phones that could play 
mp3. Picture several aisles filled with every kind of cell phone 
imaginable.  Note that I didn't go to Akihabara which may also be why I 
couldn't find much.
