http://www.flashmobcomputing.org/ I find the idea of a "Cluster Fest" (CF) enticing. Bring a machine, build up the OS, work it into the cluster. Perhaps the meeting before the CF could be about clustering. You could still build a "Jalopy Cluster", AKA Big BLU. As a side effect, build a mini-how-to-faq which could be distributed in advance of the CF. It seems that building such a beast is more about the process and less about what to do with it afterwards. Just ideas, take what you want.
