Getting back to the original issue:
"when text-mode emacs wraps a line, it displays a backslash at the end
of the line indicating that the rest of the line of continued on the
next logical line"
[--- emacs line width ---]
This is a line wrapped in\
 emacs.
[ --- end of emacs ------]

Emacs running under X (both GNU and XEmacs) use a graphical character at
the end of the line that does not get pasted when you use the mouse to
cut and paste.

But, emacs running in a pure text environment shows the backslash as
above, and you are using ssh (or telnet etc.) to log in to the Linux
system and you want to cut and paste something with long lines.

Is this the gist of the problem?
While I don't know the solution offhand, there are some variables and
commands:
1. variable: truncate-lines
   command: tooggle-truncate-lines
However, this will display a $ at the truncation point.

2. variable:print-escape-newlines
I'm not 100% sure this is the variable to clear, but it is a step in
the right direction.
