Thanks but unfortunately, those solutions don't work for me.  The 
problem transcends Xine because I have similar problems with other 
software like LIRC and a few others.  And for Xine specifically, I 
always use the CVS source.  It has always worked fine but something went 
awry in my system configuration recently so I need advice on how to fix 
aclocal.
