Yea, after sending out that mail I noticed that my FC4 server doesn't have raidtools anymore.. It looks like you might be able to use something like: mdadm --manage /dev/md0 -a /dev/hdb1 I don't know the answer to your second question. I haven't messed around enough with mdadm control of raid devices. All my previous testing was with raidtools.
