It possible that the "icons" that were cut and pasted by a windows explorer tool automatically include all three files. But I've never heard of that before. Some GUI viewer tools on Linux and Win automatically create thumbnails the first time you open the file. its possible that whatever version of Windows your son is running has a non-default action set up for handling jpg's. But without more info all of the above is just speculation.
