Incompetence, maybe, combined with pressure to cope with security threats?  
My cousin, a regular correspondent, has Verizon DSL, and his messages to  
me at Speakeasy have been bouncing.

Speakeasy VOIP has what looks like a big problem
in changing from Verizon: No phone service for many
days, as they take over your Verizon number.
This is *not* the last word, though. DSL is fine.
