Here is the general procedure I used (in my case to resize): 1. Boot the rescue (In my case RHEL 4 U3). 2. The rescue automatically mounts the root file system, so check the mount table and unmount the HD's. In my case, both /boot and /tmp were mounted. 3. Run e2fsck on the unmounted volume.
