I recently bought an HP all-in-one thingie from newegg.com. It cost more than you want to spend but it is a B&W laser printer with supposedly affordable cartridges (I haven't bought one yet), ethernet and postscript, but no duplexer. Because it is postscript and ethernet Linux just plain *works*, no driver guff of any sort. (I told Ubuntu the approximate model, but I suspect that didn't matter much.) Also, in the same desk space, it is a copier and fax machine (flatbed and sheetfeeder). The fax machine does not come with a voice handset. Maybe someday Linux will recognize it as a scanner. I keep it off most of the time, the warm up time is not bad. Maybe 15-seconds waiting for the scanner fluorescent bulb to get to full brightness. I turn it off when I am done, I don't know if it times out the bulb. -kb
