I did a reinstall last night, this time using the x86 binaries instead of the x86_64. Someone else told me that the Fedora doesn't have very good support for 64bit for desktop applications. Immediately after installing I continued with booting to X, and only opened up a Terminal screen then updated all available packages (including kernel). Then rebooted to the new kernel. It's now running the latest x86 kernel and not smp, and it's been running stable for about 12 hours. Tonight I'm going to try rebooting and using the smp kernel and see if it's stable now that the machine is updated to the latest kernel. But, my question is what benefit is it buying a new Dual Core desktop if I can't run 64 bit OS, and I may not be able to use the smp kernel. Did I just waste my money? I think you should be able to disable hyperthreading in the BIOS. I would avoid patching the kernel. In any case, if you disable hyperthreading and specifically use the single-processor kernel then see what happens. Then use the SMP kernel (still with hyperthreading disabled) and see what happens. Then, install the ATI driver if you can keep the system up that long. Additionally, have you tried one of the stand-alone distros, such as Knoppix? -- Jerry Feldman <gaf at blu.org> Boston Linux and Unix user group http://www.blu.org PGP key id:C5061EA9 PGP Key fingerprint:053C 73EC 3AC1 5C44 3E14 9245 FB00 3ED5 C506 1EA9 _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list Discuss at blu.org http://olduvai.blu.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss
