It's not old news; it's today's news.

Why should you wait? Pick a test system, point your
/etc/apt/sources.list at 

deb http://debian.lcs.mit.edu/debian/ etch main contrib

or some other mirror, and do an apt-get dist-upgrade. You will
have to reboot for the kernel upgrade, but otherwise you should
be fine.
