Most people use either database or LDAP for platform-independent central authentication. If you do that, you can use any number of front ends and back ends to them. If the auth list is pretty static, you can always use basic or digest authentication, using a SMB or NFS directory to hold the auth config file. Sorry if this is too buzzwordy.
