Did you happen to update anything (like X or PAM) between the time your son's session started and when you tried to to log him back in? I've seen really strange things happen when, for example, the X server gets updated and I've got an active session. I usually have to logout/login because things start acting weird, and that always fixes it (ie killing all the active X sessions finally purges all the old X libraries from memory).
