Wubi really does work as advertised- with minimal impact in the Windows system. Wubi uses the Windows boot loader and writes itself inside the Windows file system. There isn't even a big performance hit doing whatever transmogrification is required to abstract the NTFS files to look like they belong under Linux. The installer gives you the choice of a few Ubuntu flavors, including the Studio (multimedia) edition. It is a lengthy install, though. It starts with an installation executable, then pulls down the relevant distro, then installs and configures. Hours, not minutes.
