I find that OSX also hangs, but after an idle period of time. I have not attempted to alleviate the problem there. Also, Can you ssh into localhost? Sometimes the TERM can screw things up for me .. so on the above mentioned OSX, I'll have to set TERM to be xterm instead of xterm-color because I get a 'terminal not recognized' type of error.
