It seems that I am in new territory. People lose /var/lib/dpkg or /var/lib/dpkg/status. However, I only lost the /var/lib/dpkg/info directory, which stores things like file lists for packages, md5sums, and pre/post install scripts. I wonder why this directory would matter to apt when trying to pull down and install packages. You would think that the info directory would not be necessary.
