Hadn't heard of this before...seems like a good idea. A way to cut down on maintenance on VM guests. Be interesting to see if this ends up mostly being used by OEMs bundling it with their applications to make virtual appliances, or if it will become popular with end-users to create their own VM guests. Also the press release is vague on how this distribution is technically different. It just says it is smaller, and optimized for VMs. How would it compare to a minimal Debian install I wonder? -Tom -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Ubuntu JeOS 7.10 released Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2007 14:39:06 -0800 From: Steve Langasek <[hidden email]> The Ubuntu team is happy to announce the first release of Ubuntu JeOS, Ubuntu JeOS 7.10. Pronounced "juice", Ubuntu JeOS (Just Enough Operating System) is an efficient variant of Ubuntu configured specifically for virtual appliances. ISVs looking to develop virtual appliances will have a compelling platform in Ubuntu JeOS, an OS optimised for virtualisation that greatly reduces the complexity and maintenance overhead normally associated with general purpose operating systems. Ubuntu JeOS Edition has been tuned to take advantage of key performance technologies of the latest virtualisation products from VMware. This combination of reduced size and optimized performance ensures that Ubuntu JeOS Edition delivers a highly efficient use of server resources in large virtual deployments.
