no google on dialup?

 For some reason, I am unable to connect to google 
when I use a dialup connection; to a certain extent, 
I can get around this by using ssh to a remote shell 
account and connecting to google by a text browser (lynx). 

Does anyone else have this problem? 

Does anyone have suggestions on how I might debug 
this problem? 

Please note the following: 

   google does work from the very same computer (running ubuntu) 
   at locations with non-dialup connections 

   the problem exists both for "firefox" and "links"
