After Jarod's talk last Wednesday someone came up and asked Jarod for ideas on why his MythTV system tuned in CBS poorly on ch. 4 of his cable system. Jarod suggested checking the frequency tables to make sure they match the cable system (IRC, HRC). Another thing to check is whether ch. 4 is really where the cable company is rebroadcasting CBS. It's typical for cable providers to avoid rebroadcasting local channels on the same frequencies that the channels are broadcast over the air, as the over the air signal bleeds into the cable system and causes ghosting and other distortion. (IRC and HRC, which offset the carrier frequencies slightly, are an attempt at avoiding this.) For example, the Newton/Needham branch of Comcast doesn't use channel 7 on the cable system at all, because the bleed through from OTA ch. 7 is so bad. All the local VHF stations are rebroadcast in the 20's on the cable. So I'd recommend checking station listing for "analog, cable ready" to make sure the channel assignments are what you expect. -Tom -- Tom Metro Venture Logic, Newton, MA, USA "Enterprise solutions through open source."
