I may have my facts very wrong, but I always thought the kissing up to MS was mainly due to a couple of people hi up in Gnome's leadership. If this is the case it doesn't bother me. I've never liked Qt's history of originally not being open source, I shouldn't hold it against it, but that combined with me not liking the interface lead me to Gnome as my main desktop (When I'm not using FVWM that is). I'm also a very big GNU fan so I enjoy using Emacs and Gnome in my support for more GNU oriented software as well. Honestly I say use whichever you prefer for the interface, both are open and so far haven't done anything official that bothers me yet.
