Why not? X *does* support on-the-fly resolution changes these days...   
Heck, our X developers have even got hotplug displays with auto- 
configuration working now in Xorg 7.3. (Ooh, just like Mac OS has done   
for... 10 years?!? :) 

(For the record, the T61 I just ordered is the 15.4" widescreen,   
1680x1050 rez, Intel X3100 graphics).
