I tried this a few months ago with XP, both within Vmware Workstation
and from a separate XP machine. I installed something called SeamlessRDP
on the XP machine, then used rdesktop to connect to XP and run SeamlessRDP
instead of the XP desktop.

I had to log out of the XP desktop on the machine before I was able to
connect with rdesktop, and I could only run a single application at a time;
I couldn't open Outlook and Visio at the same time, for example.
