What do you mean by iCal in the context of an IMAP provider?

I would not recommend Gmail (or their hosted email service) as an IMAP 
provider. They run a custom IMAP server that is quirky and doesn't work 
great with Thunderbird. I've had problems ever since converting a couple 
of accounts from POP3 to IMAP.

Dreamhost seems to do a decent job at maintaining an email infrastructure.
