I'm sure there could be a more technical issue at hand, but I have found with my Suse installs that the sound drivers somehow get corrupted when I add new packages that use the drivers. I have thus learned to go to the sound driver (this is done with Yast2 in Suse/KDE) and if it is not obviously still set correctly to then just reset it and then adjust things back to normal. Sometimes it just takes a little bit of tweaking the settings to get it working again, but if the driver panel doesn't show up correctly then it has to be reset.
