I use to run FreeBSD 3.0 and 4.0 on my home network. I often claimed that it made my computer purr like a kitten like no other system. I got involved with Red Hat while doing research at CMU and I never came back. I am thrill with Ubuntu, but it is always nice to know that FreeBSD is out there pushing the edge. It is very easy to modify the kernel on FreeBSD.
