Maybe it's just load. Does postfix have that feature where it temporarily postpones delivery (it just queues) if the load on the server is too high? If there are some intermittent load issues, that could explain why some mail goes through right away, and other mail gets stuck. Though - 9 hours in the queue seems unlikely in this scenario, unless the retry sequence is somehow mucked up. Or, perhaps load spikes every time delivery is tried.
