I don't know.  I have no experience with Virtualbox, so I can't say Qemu 
is better. 

I think when I first looked at such things Virtualbox was 
proprietary-only, so I dismissed it. 

Looking quickly at features, the proprietary image format worries me, I 
would want to be sure I could always get my data out and into a 
competitor.  Also, the proprietary/GPL split means they will always try 
add a must-have feature to the proprietary version. A purely open source 
project, in contrast, will try to add the must-have feature. 

That said, I am ignorant, Virtualbox might have some benefits I don't 
know about.
