I've had no success trying to get a login banner to appear on a freshly installed 64-bit Ubuntu Gutsy system. I tried modifying the /etc/gdm/gdm.conf and /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom files, which only led to an error "No servers were defined in the configuration file and XDMCP was disabled." http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-unix-linux-change-gnome-login-banner.html I also will note that I've tried a few fresh installs of Gutsy on this system, performed apt-get updates each time, and, when trying to sudo gdmsetup, then selecting the Local tab, and selecting Custom in the Welcome Message section, the window freezes for a minute, then crashes with a core dump. This leads me to believe that Gutsy, at least updated, has problems with displaying a custom message. I haven't tried making the change with an out-of-box install. Ideas? Any ideas if these kinds of bugs/problems/obstacles have been or are going to be addressed in Hardy? Thanks.
