I'm not questioning MPEG over USB; that's nothing like full-rate DV. Firewire was designed with real-time video in mind; handling full-rate DV was the design goal. USB2 may have a comparable overall throughput, but I'm skeptical of the implicit claim that it has the real-time functionality to deliver full-rate DV without dropping a lot of frames.
