gnome problem

i'm running a gnome desktop under ubuntu gutzy.

i am not aware of what i might have done to cause it, but
suddenly, my terminal, firefox, etc windows show up without
title bars and permanently locked to the the upper left
corner of the screen, right under the top panel.

they can be neither moved nor resized. i've been through
all the menues and preferences that i could find that might
affect this and have found nothing.

i have a second system running essentially the same things
which is running normally.

what did i do? what do i do?
