cloning a desktop to a notebook [SOLVED]

So, I did this again, and when I tried it previously, I couldn't get
the actual install part to do anything (using apt-get -f install).
Instead, I found that using

sudo apt-get -u dselect-upgrade

is the final command that works.

So, to clone the package installation state of System A to System B do
the following:

== on System A ==
sudo dpkg --get-selections > package-list.txt

copy package-list.txt from System A to System B

== on System B ==
sudo dpkg --set-selections < package-list.txt
sudo apt-get -u dselect-upgrade
