centos 5.2, vnc, x



I've found NX, which runs over ssh, provides a much more responsive
experience than running VNC over ssh.
NX: http://www.nomachine.com/

However, it's not free (as in beer) but they do offer versions for
personal or non-commercial use. There is also an Open Source port called
FreeNX:
