My master library is ripped and encoded with Apple Lossless (iTunes). I re-encode from that master library into whatever format is appropriate for my needs. For MP3s I usually use LAME with the -- preset-extreme option. FLAC could be substituted for ALAC if you ever decided to duplicate this with something other than iTunes. --Rich P.
