I was trying to remember GEM and DesqView when I mentioned TopView. I just can't get my memory to work like I want it to some days. Yes., I agree with your assessment. Also M$ charges a very low fee to mfgr's to allow them to install desktop OS, and in the commodity market for many desktops, this is a benefit to the manufacturers. The servers are an entirely different market. I worked for a regional bank that hated anything not M$ but hired me because I could spell it. IT Management was effectively 'scared', because of their reading in the local business press. Since they paid me, I tolerated it, took their money, and life goes on. IHS ...
