I had a contract with Modis (New=20 Hampshire) at a small defense contractor in Burlington. I had no real=20 problems with them as I knew the people at that office which had been=20 acquired by Modis. My next contract was with Polaroid's ID division in=20 Bedford (their only profitable division at the time), then after the=20 Polaroid contrat, I went to Raytheon in Bedford, but my contract was=20 with HP. The agency was an agency in Woburn that had been acquired by=20 Modis. Apparently Modis had acquired only the engineering part of the=20 agency. This was a strange deal where I was asked to sign all my time=20 sheets for a year. The job included both holidays and some vacation time = (unusual for a contract). After about 4 months I was contacted by Modis=20 and told that they had a new timesheet form. So, I then signed the forms = for the rest of the year and gave them to my HP contract admin. I was=20 then informed that Modis was moving from the Woburn office to their=20 existing Burlington office. Apparently, when they bought the engineering = consulting division of the other company, there was a non-compete which=20 expired in mid-1999, and the owner of that company wanted to reopen the=20 engineering consulting division. The only person from the original=20 company to make the move to Woburn was a secretary. I then got a call=20 from someone who said that he was my contact at Modis, and he took me=20 out to lunch. A few months later, I was nearing the end of the contract=20 and while I knew that I would be renewed, I wanted to check my=20 possibilities. I also generally give my current contract agency a heads=20 up if they want to place me. This is when the fun started. I went to=20 call Modis in Burlington, and I found that I had a new contact person.=20 The first question I asked was when was the official end of my contract. = My contact was a vp, who asked me to send her a resume. After a period=20 of time, I emailed her to query about whether she had received my resume = (she said she did not), and when the official end of my contract was, so = I emailed her my resume again. She then told me that HP personnel had=20 never heard of me. So I told her to check with the contract admin=20 Andover. She told me that they don't deal with anoyone other than=20 personnel. I also asked her about my resume, and if she received it this = time. She was very curt and said that she had no jobs. I asked her to=20 check with Modis, NH, and she said she did and they had no jobs. The=20 emails I received from her was equally curt. I then decided to contact=20 the other agencies I dealt with, and hooked up with Compaq in=20 Marlborough. I then got a threatening email from her about a non-compete = clause in my contract. I knew my contract only restricted me to=20 Raytheon. Basically, the whole thing was really strange since I knew=20 there were plenty of jobs out there at the time. Compaq actually gave me = a choice of a couple of jobs Additionally, I had lunch with my HP=20 contract admin and he told me he was having problems with Modis also. In = my experience with contract agencies, most were very appreciative when I = would give them a heads up towards the end of a contract. --=20 Jerry Feldman <gaf-mNDKBlG2WHs at public.gmane.org> Boston Linux and Unix PGP key id: 537C5846 PGP Key fingerprint: 3D1B 8377 A3C0 A5F2 ECBB CA3B 4607 4319 537C 5846
