That is your problem, then.

Start with:

rm -r /etc/postfix
apt-get install --reinstall postfix
apt-get install bsd-mailx

And try again:
echo test | mail -s "test" jdm-LPA1KyJyIuz1P9xLtpHBDw at public.gmane.org

If it still doesn't work, we need to figure out what you've done
to postfix.
