USB to USB communication?

Given how cheap USB-to-Ethernet dongles are now, you might just
consider two of them
and an Ethernet cross-over cable to connect them together.   You would
still need some way to
manually or automatically configure the IP addresses.  I know that
zeroconf IP is available
for Linux, but I haven't played with it much myself....
