Oh ... apparently the emulation is immature, or poor, or incomplete ... It seems running solaris up to 6 is ok, but solaris 8 on the sparc in qemu (which is the requirement here) is almost undoable. It'll only run in "minimal" mode... Which is severely impaired... Not really an OS at that point... Thanks for the suggestion though.
