In Martin's world I can have any OS that I want as long as it's Linux in console mode. Can't use GNOME or KDE because they run on X11 which has a BSD-like license that permits proprietary derivatives. Can't use any of the BSD Unixes for the same reason -- including Mac OS X. Plan 9 is out because the Lucent License is incompatible with the GPL. Haiku uses the MIT X11 License so see comments about X11. Open Solaris just became unavailable due to Oracle pulling it back out of the CDDL (never mind CDDL-GPL compatibility issues).

Not much choice after all, huh?
