Entire file system goes read-only

The /etc/fstab and syslog. fstab to make sure that the filesystem remounts as read-only on disk errors, and syslog to determine the nature of the error that caused the read-only remount. Could be a bad sector. Could be a failing controller. Could be a faulty cable somewhere. Could be any number of other things.
