Then the hard drive went south, so I got a fresh drive, bought an Ubuntu CD-ROM from the Micro Center, did a fresh install from the CD-ROM, and then upgraded over the network to the then-latest version. At some point I noticed that I was running the 32-bit version of the OS, not 64-bit. Is there a relatively painless way to move everything over? I've been interested in doing this for a while now on a couple of machines and every time I research the subject I come up empty on anything for Ubuntu. There are some web pages out there that talk about Fedora or Debian, but nothing that is even remotely supported by anyone. Here are some links: Debian: http://teddyb.org/~rlpowell/hobbies/debian_arch_up/ Fedora: http://www.linux.com/archive/feature/123800 I've never gotten to the point that I'm willing to risk having to do a complete reinstall if I can't hack out the upgrade. If you get something to work please let me know what you did. :-) Good Luck, Bill Bogstad ------------------------------ Message: 5 Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2010 11:27:18 -0400 From: Dan Ritter <dsr-mzpnVDyJpH4k7aNtvndDlA at public.gmane.org> Subject: Re: switching from 32-bit to 64-bit To: Seth Gordon <sethg-Dp9fwfP21SfQT0dZR+AlfA at public.gmane.org> Cc: BLU <discuss-mNDKBlG2WHs at public.gmane.org> Message-ID: <20100729152718.GY2021-mzpnVDyJpH4k7aNtvndDlA at public.gmane.org> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii On Thu, Jul 29, 2010 at 10:12:01AM -0400, Seth Gordon wrote: > I have a desktop machine at home that used to run 64-bit Ubuntu. Unlike switching kernels, x86-32 to x86-64 is a complete architecture change. There is no in-place upgrade. Your best bet is to add a disk, install 64-bit on that, test things, and move data over. -dsr- -- http://tao.merseine.nu/~dsr/eula.html is hereby incorporated by reference. I received an invitation to make an easy $225.00 for a 1 hour phone interview. Unfortunately I don't qualify for this study but I wanted to let others know about it in case someone within our group who qualifies is interested. The study is being scheduled right now and will continue into next week but you would need to respond quickly to the phone number mentioned. They seem to be looking for people who write code and possibly make decisions or advise others. *Schlesinger Associates, a marketing research firm in the Dallas Galleria area, is conducting a telephone interview on the topic of Media. This is a 1-hour study with available times throughout this week. We are looking to speak with Web Developers. There is a short pre-group assignment that must be completed prior to the telephone interview. This is not a sales presentation, and you will not be asked to buy anything. Below is specific information about our research study: TOPIC: Media DATE: Either Thursday August 29th or Friday August 30th TIMES: Available throughout the day INCENTIVE : $225 LOCATION: Telephone Interview INFORMATION: Participation is by reservation only.
