From what Rich wrote, it seemed to me that he wasn't transcoding the DVDs; he was just pulling the contents off as an ISO. I have used vobcopy to grab the bits off DVDs before. It has mostly been fine. dvdisaster has good error correct and can handle the weird bits that some film studios burn onto DVDs to thwart copying. http://dvdisaster.net/en/ It's a GUI app though, and it would be easier to implement a CLI tool as an option into the MythTV interface.
