So little actual software development in software engineering roles

Well, usually not. But there are a few apps that have sold hundreds of 
thousands of copies; even at a measly $1 or $2 (minus the 30% cut that 
the store takes) that adds up to something. But a more reliable way to 
make money on phone apps is probably to get somebody to hire you to 
develop one.
