Unfortunately the Ubuntu package for it conflicts with Network Manager, and wicd doesn't support VPNs. Perhaps it can be force installed, as long as you are careful to make sure NM is configured not to manage the wireless interface. And I'm sure the VPN could be managed without the GUI. But I'm not sure either option is worth it just to have a WLAN that connects faster.
